1000 BEATS, THE BEST PLACE TO LEARN!

1000 BEATS is a weekend dedicated to the world of percussion and drums, an open-air school with a programme full of events. Sponsored by the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana and the Conservatorio “Antonio Scontrino” in Trapani, it is aimed at students and professionals of all the conservatories and music schools in Europe. Its mission is ambitious: to bring together 1,000 percussionists and drummers for a multicultural exchange, not only from an educational point of view but also from a social one.

Travel

1 destination, 1000 surprises. 1000 BEATS takes place in Selinunte, a wonderful place on an island which has been the crossroads of life since ancient times, evocative of the sea, breath-taking views, the ancient fishing village, the reserve and the sand dunes, the largest archaeological park in Europe. Thanks to our excursions and guided tours, you will get to know simple folk who are proud of their culture, you will stroll through the history and the natural beauty of the place and you will taste the excellent local cuisine and the renowned wine.

Play for peace

1 destination, 1000 beats. 1000 BEATS will end with a party that involves all the participants in a collective improvisation dedicated to dialogue between people, overlooking the shores of the Mediterranean. For one day, it will not be the echoes of war or the desperate cries of migrants that cross the sea, but just the peaceful sound coming from Sicily, a land ultimately modern and mafia-free.

PROGRAM

1000 BEATS will be held from Friday 28 April to Monday 1 May 2017. The event includes: 4 sessions in English from world famous musicians in the archaeological park of Selinunte; 1 workshop dedicated to innovation; 2 public performances given by the students and teachers; 2 exclusive concerts. The classes will be held in the rooms of the ancient Baglio Florio, between the open-air theatre and the Temple of Hera, reached by a guided tour to discover the beauty of the archaeological park.

TEACHERS & ARTISTS

JOJO MAYER

Swiss born Jojo Mayer started playing drums at an early age and had his first public performance at 2 sitting in with his dad’s band.

At age 18 he received his first international exposure when touring with Monty Alexander and backing up Jazz legends such as Dizzy Gillespie and Nina Simone.

In the early 90′s he moved from Europe to NYC where he worked as a first call sideman for a wide range of artists and styles.

As a leader he created his seminal work with NERVE, which established him as one of the great performers and innovators on the instrument. His concepts and techniques of reverse engineering electronic drumbeats in real time on a acoustic drum set introduced a new paradigm and opened the door for an entire generation of musicians to follow.

In 2014 Modern Drummer Magazines listed him as one of the 50 Greatest Drummers of All Time.

    LEIGH HOWARD STEVENS

“The world’s greatest classical marimbist… Stevens has revolutionized the playing of the instrument”. – Time Magazine.

Born in Orange, New Jersey, United States of America, March 9, 1953.

It is difficult to find any aspect of marimba technique, repertoire or instrument design that has not been profoundly changed by the work of Leigh Howard Stevens. His one-handed rolls, mallet independence, contrasting roll types and birch-handle mallets are now commonplace in modern marimba playing.

His original concepts are outlined in his book, Method of Movement, which has been published in five languages.

In addition to performing, composing and teaching, he designs instruments and mallets for Malletech, a company he founded.

He has been awarded nine U.S. Patents, featured in numerous periodicals such as The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, and among many other honors, has been elected into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame.

      EVELYN GLENNIE

Evelyn Glennie is the first person in history to successfully create and sustain a full-time career as a solo percussionist, performing worldwide with the greatest conductors, orchestras, and artists. She fondly recalls having played the first percussion concert in the history of The Proms at the Albert Hall in 1992, which paved the way for orchestras around the world to feature percussion concerti. She had the honour of a leading role in the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Evelyn regularly provides master classes and consultations designed to guide the next generation. She is also a leading commissioner of new works for solo percussion, Evelyn has more than 200 pieces to her name from many of the world’s most eminent composers. The film ‘Touch the Sound’ and her enlightening TED speech remain key testimonies to her approach to sound-creation.
To this day, Evelyn continues to invest in realising her vision – to Teach the World to Listen – while looking to open a centre that embodies her mission: “to improve communication and social cohesion by encouraging everyone to discover new ways of listening. We want to inspire, to create, to engage and to empower”.
